I tap on the side of the hover car, flicking my eyes to Lucifer, noting how our demeanors have reversed since the beginning of this little voyage. Lucifer has spent the remainder avoiding my gaze, muttering under his breath, raking his nails into his hair, and wearing a twisted frown. On the contrary, a proud warmth nourishes my chest, and my halo has sparked to life. It practically purrs its glow upon my figure.

As the hovercar passes through the Inner Gates to the Vestibule, I stop tapping and open my mouth to say, “We met on Mount—”

He raises his hand with a snarl. “I don’t want to fucking hear it.”

“It involved blood and lust,” I hint, curling my lips into a teasing smile.

The Devil bares his demon teeth. “I still don’t want to fucking hear it.”

I shrug. His loss. Sweat blossoms on my brow when I remember that night because violence and pain substitute as foreplay for me. That night, it practically saturated the air. And Mira…well, a tsunami of butterflies whirls in my belly from the memory of her kiss of gratitude. How we’d allied, though we were no more than ships crossing in the night. Two ships anyone would want to fucking ship, my mouth grows wet at the memory of her fingers upon my neck while mine dragged through her hair, unraveling it from its tidy bun. So many times, I tried to breach the Nine Circles to find her again.

And failed.

In any case, the hover car slows, forbidding any more diverting thoughts. After stopping, Lucifer wastes no time climbing out of the vehicle, though he does linger outside and offers a hand to me with a cold, detached expression. Aggravated by his bipolar attitude, I ignore the hand and spring down from the hover car onto the cracked sidewalk with the ends of my coat flicking in the breeze.

We’ve arrived at a transport station which is a glorified parking garage with an underground network of mag-force trams. Of course, the Devil doesn’t have as much gem-tech here in the Outer Circle and sticks to cheaper magnetic-field tech. All designed so people will hunger for the Inner Circles whether or not they can pay.

The ruler of Hell on Earth had to signal our arrival since dozens of security members have regulated the usual citizens beyond the fence-line of the station. In the distance is a residential district of hundreds of sub-section housing, and I imagine they’re mostly for service members in the Outer Circle.

The mobs cheering and chanting Lucifer’s name from the fences divert my attention. What’s worse is when the Devil incarnate himself moves toward the demon security, pacing before the mob grows wilder upon his approach. Disbelief turns my stomach to iron, but I follow at a safe distance, observing as Lucifer sweeps his robe behind him and spreads his arms wide to the citizens. He basks in their applause. I can’t help but blink again and again when he takes the time to sign
